FAQ/About Naturopathic Medicine

1. What is Naturopathic Medicine? Naturopathic medicine is based on 6 principles:

Healing power of nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae) Naturopathic physicians work to support and restore nature's powerful healing mechanisms in the body, mind and spirit by using techniques that are in harmony with natural processes.
First do no harm (Primum non nocere) Naturopathic physicians prefer non-invasive treatments which minimize the risk of harmful side effects.
Find and Treat the cause (Tolle causam) Every illness has an underlying cause.., often found in aspects of the individual's lifestyle. A Naturopathic physician is trained to find and remove the cause of the illness.
Treat the whole person.  Naturopaths know that health and disease come from a complex interaction of factors and thereby treat the person, not the disease.
Doctor as teacher (Docere) Naturopaths, as teachers, empower their patients to understand their condition and explore the appropriate treatment options.
Prevention.  The Naturopathic approach to health can prevent minor illness from developing into more serious or chronic degenerative disease.

2.What is a Naturopathic Physician?

A Naturopathic physician is a primary care doctor who received a doctorate from an accredited Naturopathic Medical College. In order to be a doctor, she had to complete a 4 year program which emphasized basic sciences, clinical diagnosis and natural therapeutics. Two years of clinical experience is also required with an optional residency.

3. What is the difference betwen a naturopathic doctor and a medical doctor?

A Medical doctor will diagnose and treat the presenting symptoms using primarily pharmaceutical drugs or surgery. A Naturopathic doctor will diagnose and treat the whole person, looking for the cause of the symptoms and treat the person using a variety of therapeutics.
